In consonance with the commitment of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to enhance green cover and ensure clean environment, Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal on Friday launched a massive plantation drive alongside Buddha Dariya near the backside of historic Gurudwara Gau Ghat on the eve of World Wetlands Day.

Accompanied by MLAs Ashok Parashar Pappi, Kulwant Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, Rajya Sabha MP Seechewal said that the state government was committed to providing clean air, water and earth and sincerr efforts were being made in this direction.

He said that it was high time for the people to come forward and join the hands with the administration for planting saplings and ensuring proper upkeep. He said that each person must protect the environment for giving a better future to the coming generations by planting saplings.

He added there is a regular increase in the levels of air, water, and soil pollution and the trees can play a crucial role in conserving our environment by reducing pollutants. He said that the entire stretch of the Buddha Dariya would be covered phase-wise in this drive.

Seechewal said that the clean and pollution free environment was vital for ensuring good health of the citizens as trees were only a source of oxygen, which was the basis of human life on the earth. He also said that the topmost priority was being accorded to speedy completion of the rejuvenation project of the Buddha Dariya.

He said that Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was very close to nature and environment and this drive was a most suitable tribute to the great Guru, who had given a message of Pawan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dharat Mahatt.

Exhorting the residents of the district to play a pivotal role in making it a clean, green and pollution free district, MLAs Ashok Parashar, Kulwant Singh Sidhu and Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney said that such plantation drives were important to keep the environment clean.

They also urged the people to become green ambassadors and participate actively in plantation drives to make it mass movement. They said that everyone should take a pledge to stop pollution for giving better future to the coming generations by planting saplings.

Prominent amongst those present on the occasion included ADC Rural Development Anmol Singh Dhaliwal, MC Additional Commissioner Paramdeep Singh and others.
