Cop hospitalized after thrashed by Army soldiers

An Army officer Monday allegedly directed his soldiers to rough up a Jammu and Kashmir Police officer for checking his Identity card at the drop gate of Baltal base camp of Amarnath Yatra.Reports said that an Army officer from 27 Punjab Regiment in civivies accompanied by a group of men appeared near drop gate after dusk hours and tried to enter into the Baltal base camp of Amarnath Yatra. Eyewitnesses told CNS that the police officer on duty Nazir Ahmed Wani demanded identity card from the officer who took it as an insult. The officer according to eyewitness reportedly felt humiliated as he was accompanied by his friends and relatives. 

“Finally, the Army officer was allowed to enter into the base camp. Ironically, the said officer after an hour returned with a group of soldiers who without any provocation started beating the sub-inspector Nazir Ahmed Wani (106/Gbl). They thrashed him mercilessly, hit him with gun buts and kicked him from right left and centre,” a police official told CNS on condition of anonymity.Reports said that it were locals and some other Kashmiri policemen who came for the rescue of the victim police officer and saved him from the wrath of unbridled army soldiers.The police officer was shifted to Baltal Base camp hospital where from he was rushed to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura.

Sources told CNS that top police officials have brought the matter into the notice of army brass, however, Srinagar based Defence spokesperson said that he doesn’t know anything about the issue and he will try to ascertain the facts.A top police officer of the district who wished not to be named told CNS that the legal action has been initiated against the erring army officer and army has started internal court of inquiry. He further added that the victim police officer has also been shifted from Baltal to some other place. (CNS)
