The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, Syeed Fakhrudin Hamid today chaired the District level Narco Coordination (NCORD) meeting at DC Office, here.

At the outset, the DC stressed on the role of education and health departments vis a vis spreading awareness regarding effects of drug abuse and appealing students to stay away from the menace is critical. 

He said that teachers must be sensitized and parents educated and requested to report any unusual behaviour or complains by their wards regarding unscrupulous elements approaching them for using drugs. 

The DC said that victims of drug abuse need to be identified and rehabilitated through institutional support. He highlighted the role of Higher and School Education department in this regard. He discussed the action taken report of the stakeholders in this regard. 

Calling it a disaster for the society, DC emphasised upon the officers to take the responsibility of eradication of drug menace seriously both at Officer level and at social level. 

He stressed upon the officers for taking legal action against the drug peddlers and book them under relevant laws besides shoulder the responsibility as a whole.

He said that UT Administration is very keen to eradicate the drug menace from the UT and to chanelise the youth power towards better future. He further said that involvement of families, parents,religious leaders and awareness regarding the early signs will play a pivotal role in curbing the menace. 

SSP Anantnag said that awareness creation regarding desisting from illicit cultivation to people is essential. He said that strict action must be taken against those business establishments which are found involved in malpractices and  discouraging farmers from  cultivation will bring good results. 

Principal GDC Anantnag said that several such IEC initiatives to spread awareness have been held in the colleges. He said that student driven clubs have been setup for identifying victims. 

Asst Drug Controller said that  as part of regular surveillance on pharmaceutical vendors advisory boards have been installed at all such vending points as well as CCTV cameras have been installed. He said drugs and pharmacists have been sensitized regarding the menace. 

The meeting was attended by SSP Anantnag, ADC, SDMs, Principal GDC Boys, CMO, MS MMABM Hospital, representatives of police from sub divisions, representatives from Drug De Addiction Centres, DSWO Anantnag, NRLM officers and Doctors among others.
