Former Olympian and country's legendary boxer Padam Shri Kaur Singh passed away this morning at a private hospital in Kurukshetra after a brief illness. He was around 74 years old and his last rites were performed with full military honors and religious rituals at his native village Khunal Khurd. 

On this occasion, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, on behalf of the Punjab government, expressed deep sympathy with the victim's family and offered prayers for the departed soul. On this occasion, Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that the great boxer Kaur Singh, while living a completely simple life, brought laurels to the state and the country by winning national and international level boxing competitions. 

He said that the state government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has made the biography of this sports pioneer a part of the school syllabus from this academic session so that the students can be made aware of the life of this great sports personality. He also said that soon a memorial will be built in the memory of Padma Shri and Arjuna awardee Kaur Singh which would help the younger generations to get motivated from his life.

Cabinet Minister Cheema said that Kaur Singh had a passion for boxing and was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1982 and the Padma Shri Award in 1983 for his distinguished achievements, as well as the Vishishat Sewa Medal in 1988 for his distinguished services in the Indian Army.

Meanwhile, on the demise of Padma Shri Kaur Singh, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has expressed his deep sorrow with the victim's family through a condolence message. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said that the life and contribution of Kaur Singh will inspire the budding sportspersons to work hard and perform well in the field of sports.

Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal, Sanju and Amrit Sidhu on behalf of Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, District Sports Officer Ranbir Singh Bhangu on behalf of Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Arjuna Awardee Sajjan Singh Cheema, along with senior coaches and other dignitaries placed wreaths. On this occasion, under the leadership of Colonel Amit Bhagi, the jawans of 152 Sikh Regiment paid a salute to Padma Shri Kaur Singh.

Earlier, Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal went to the residence of Kaur Singh and expressed their grief with the family members and relatives and prayed to God to give strength to the family.
