The Department of Biotechnology, CGC Landran observed World Cancer Day with a number of activities undertaken over the course of a week, to build awareness about this dreaded disease as also to encourage everyone to lead an active lifestyle, adopt healthy eating habits and  being open to regular screenings & check-ups which, can help in its early detection and treatment.

Organised in keeping with this year’s theme ‘Close the care gap’, the activities undertaken by CGC students and faculty included a five km walkathon in three villages with more than 150 participants in association with Sohana Hospital.

This was followed by a special talk session featuring eminent experts in the field of cancer treatment & research including Dr. Sushmita Ghoshal, Professor and Head, Radiotherapy and Oncology Department, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Prof. Kulbhushan Tikoo, NIPER, Mohali, Dr Jatin Sarin, Director Oncology, Ivy Hospital and Dr. Meenakshi Mittal, Ivy Hospital.

Sharing her thoughts on cancer prevention and awareness, Dr. Sushmita Ghoshal placed emphasis on shunning the ostrich approach when it comes to getting oneself tested or screened. Early detection of cancer can ensure its timely, effective treatment which can play a huge role in aiding patients to get fully cured and lead better lives.

She urged everyone to bring about a change in attitude towards this disease which can reduce the fear and dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding it. She underscored the need for people to unite and demand quality cancer care as well as dignity, respect and support for the patients as well caregivers.

The activities culminated today with a free medical camp organised in village Saneta by volunteers from the department of Biotechnology CGC Landran in association with Ivy hospital, Mohali.
