District Development Commissioner Rajouri, Vikas Kundal today chaired a meeting to discuss the finalization of Panchayat Solid Waste Management plan.Speaking at the meeting, the DDC said that the properly segregated waste can be scientifically processed and converted into composite which will help to lessen the pollution caused by the solid waste.

He also said that there is a need to scale up solid waste management measures in rural areas to reduce environmental pollution and keep these areas clean. The DO NRLM was asked to constitute more SHGs or train the already constituted SHGs to work for the segregation of solid waste and to convert waste into wealth.

He maintained that the SHGs would work on the 'waste to wealth' concept which aims to identify, develop and deploy technologies to treat waste to generate energy, recycle materials and extract resources of value.

He asked the concerned officers to educate the people about the need for the segregation of solid waste at the source and added that as many as 178 segregation units will be set up in the district. The BDOs were directed to rope in NGOs already working in solid waste management for the effective management of solid waste in their blocks.

They were further asked to check the possibilities of whether the e rickshaws can be used for the transportation of the solid waste.Among the others present during the meeting were Chief Planning Officer, Mohammad Khurshid; Assistant Commissioner Development, Vijay Kumar;  DPO, Chander Kant Bhagat; DO NRLM, Javed Ul Sofi and BDOs.
