In order to disseminate the message of cleanliness among the villages, Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik on Friday kick-started Swachhta hi Sewa (Phase-II) initiative to clean up the garbage/waste dumped, ponds besides sensitizing the masses against single-use plastic through Gram-Sabhas.

Malik, who was presiding over a meeting, said that for the next 15-days, an intensive cleanliness and mass awareness drive will be carried out for which the department of Water Supply and Sanitation has been designated as the nodal agency to supervise the activities. 

She said that this year's Swachhata Hi Seva focused on managing the legacy waste in the villages. She mentioned that a cluster of 10 villages has been selected for the activities including cleanliness of garbage, and ponds, implementation of solid and liquid waste, awareness rallies, pledge of cleanliness, passing a resolution against single-use plastic through Gram Sabhas, declaring ODF plus villages and others.

Deputy Commissioner said that the aim of the campaign was to ensure that people became active partners with the administration in keeping their surroundings clean and green. She emphasized that collective efforts of the administration, Department of Rural Development of Panchayats, and other stakeholders, Gram Panchayats will make their best efforts to make the Swachhta hi Sewa campaign successful and expressed hope that the Ludhiana villages would soon emerge as a clean, green and pollution free.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Amit Kumar Panchal also stressed adding more villages to the list of ODF-category which was one of the key components of the campaign.Prominent amongst present on the occasion included Executive Engineers Jaskaran Singh, Rai Varinder Singh, Mandeep Singh, and officials from Education and Program office.
