French tennis player Gael Monfils on Wednesday was ruled out of the US Open due to a foot injury, which he suffered last week in Montreal. The 35-year-old clashed with rising British star Jack Draper in the Montreal Masters last-16 on Thursday.

At the start of the second set, Monfils sustained a foot injury and he required an immediate intervention. After a visit from the doctor, Monfils tried to continue the match but it was too painful so he decided to retire from the match.

"Hello! Tough one tonight in Montreal. The 1st exams that I have had are not great. I have decided to fly back to Europe to consult with my doctors. I will keep you updated as soon as possible. Thank you again for all your messages of support," Monfils tweeted after the match.

After the latest medical exams, the world number 22 has been now forced to undergo a new period of treatment."Dear all, following the latest medical exams that I took upon returning to Europe, I will sadly not be able to play at the US Open this year.

I am forced to undergo a new period of treatment before being able to resume tournaments," Monfils said in a tweet on Wednesday.Earlier in May, Monfils had undergone a heel surgery and was forced to skip the French Open.

After the French Open, Monfils also skipped the entire grass season, including Wimbledon. This week, he was playing his first tournament in three months. He won two matches at the Canadian Masters before his injury problems resurfaced again in the game against Draper and he was forced to retire mid-match.
