Padma Shri Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, a Rajya Sabha Member and an acclaimed environmentalist working to conserve water and its appropriate treatment, visited the Central University of Punjab on Tuesday. On this occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari welcomed Sant Seechewal and briefed him about the growth journey of the university.

While interacting with faculty and officers of the university in a special interaction session, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal stated that clean air, clean water and clean food are the fundamental rights of every citizen. However, the contamination of harmful pollutants in air, water, and soil causes not only environmental destruction but also a rise in global temperature.

He shared his experiences of the rejuvenation of the Kali Bein rivulet and stressed the need for conservation of water through rainwater harvesting, establishment of water treatment centres and reuse of wastewater after treatment for irrigation and other purposes. He also highlighted that people should consider Seechewal Village as a model where every drop of water is utilised effectively.

Sant Seechewal stated that treatment of solid and liquid waste could be possible through technological innovation. He motivated the faculty and scientists of CUPB to sensitize young minds to environmental conservation and find innovative solutions for sustainable development.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.P. Tiwari expressed his gratitude towards Sant Seechewal and assured him that CUPB is committed to working towards spreading awareness about environmental protection through the adoption of a sustainable lifestyle.

During this visit, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, along with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari and Prof. Vinod Kumar Garg, Dean Student Welfare, planted tree saplings at the university campus to promote the message of ‘Save Our Environment’. The programme was attended by officers, faculty and staff members of the university
