To extend the benefits of professional training/orientation to the students of colleges affiliated with University of Jammu, a  5-day theatre workshop began in  Government College for Women, Udhampur,   here today. The workshop was inaugurated  by  Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee University of Jammu, Prof. Vishav Raksha and the host College Principal, Dr. Monika Sharma; Co-Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee University of Jammu, Prof. Sanjana Koul .

Prof. Vishav Raksha, Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee University of Jammu, was the chief guest on the occasion. The 5-day Theatre Workshop has been organized by Department of Students Welfare University of Jammu in collaboration with Department of Music and Students Welfare Committee, Government College for Women Udhampur.

As many as 50 students from different colleges of district Udhampur affiliated with   University of Jammu are participating in the workshop. The students who participated in the workshop from different colleges were GDC Udhampur, GDC Ramnagar, GDC Chenani, GDC Neli Nallah, Shivalik College of Education, Kalra College of Education, Bhartiya College of Education and Bhaskar Degree College Udhampur respectively.

While speaking on the occasion, the chief guest informed that the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu keeps on organizing several training camps/workshops of music, dance, theatre, fine arts etc. for the benefit of students of university and affiliated colleges. But it has been observed that most of the time, the students from far-off places don’t find it feasible to come a long way to participate and benefit of such workshops.

So, to overcome this limitation, the Department of Students Welfare has formulated this new initiative which would extend the benefit of professional training/orientation to maximum students. She also congratulated Dr. Monika Sharma, Principal, GCW Udhampur for hosting the first ever workshop of this programme which is extending benefit to the students of around nine colleges.

In her address, Principal GCW Udhampur Dr. Monika Sharma said that the main objective of this workshop is not to make the students actor/actress but to make them aware about the techniques of theater and provide them ample opportunity to reveal and develop their personality. Therefore, students can express themselves and communicate with others very confidently, on any stage, using the means of theatre, she added.

Dr. Monika appreciated the music department for organizing such a wonderful event, which gives opportunity to the participants. She informed that this workshop will provide a common platform to the students and enable them to highlight their talents which will help in building confidence in them. She urged the department to organize more such programs in the near future also.

Earlier, Co-Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee University of Jammu, Prof. Sanjana Koul stated that under the Training Outreach programme, the Department of Students Welfare would be sending the expert resource persons to conduct short-term workshops/orientation programmes in the colleges located at far-off places.

One college (as per geographical location) would be designated to become the nodal college which would coordinate with its nearby colleges and invite those students who are interested in availing the benefit of training. This way the orientation would reach more students who have talent but require proper guidance.

This programme would kindle an interest for cultural/literary/fine-arts activities amongst the students which is also an important aspect for their holistic personality development, she added. The workshop was coordinated by Drama Instructor Students Welfare University of Jammu,  Sumit Sharma and Assistant Professor Department of Music, Yash Kumar.

HOD Music, Dr. Seema Sharma presented vote of thanks while the programme was anchored by the students of GCW Udhampur Swati Gandotra and Mahvish.
