24 May 2022

World Thyroid Day is celebrated globally on 25 May every year. The biggest reason is not being able to make enough hormones by the thyroid gland.

Every human being is suffering from some disease, there are many diseases in the world which arise due to change in the food and lifestyle of the person. Thyroid is also one of these diseases for which lifestyle can be considered responsible. This disease is spreading faster in women than men, due to weight gain. Increasing weight gives rise to many other diseases in women.

What is the main purpose of celebrating World Thyroid Day?

The main objective of celebrating World Thyroid Day is to spread awareness about thyroid and to know about the prevention and treatment of thyroid diseases.

What is the history of the establishment of Thyroid Day?

The day was started in 2008 as a part of a campaign led by the European Thyroid Association (ETA) and the American Thyroid Association (ATA), followed by the Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) and the Asia Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA). Together with the patients of thyroid disease and the doctor and the doctor who treated them began to be celebrated.

What is thyroid disease?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower part of the neck in the endocrine gland, which produces T3 (Thyroxine) and T4 (Triiodothyronine) in the neck and thyroid gland in the body called thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The hormones it makes control the body's energy, protein production and sensitivity to other hormones.

What is thyroid disorder?

Thyroid disorder is caused by disturbances in the functioning of the thyroid gland. This is a butterfly-shaped gland located just below Adam's apple. This is a small but very important gland that plays an important role in our day-to-day functioning and is responsible for all metabolic activity.

What are the causes of hyperthyroidism?

Thyroid hormone deficiency causes hypothyroidism (sudden weight gain) and an increase in thyroid hormone causes hyperthyroidism. Maintaining proper iodine levels in the diet and limiting the use of raw goitrogenic vegetables are helpful in preventing thyroid diseases.

Women are more prone to thyroid problems than men:

Thyroid is becoming a common disease in women. Although this disease occurs in men too, but mostly women suffer from it. If we talk in the language of statistics, then 80 out of every 100 patients of thyroid are women and it has also been found that thyroid disease is caused by iodine deficiency in the body.

Symptoms of Thyroid:

Time of Thyroid screening ?

Studies have found that thyroid screening should be started from the age of 35 and after every 5 years it should be regularly checked. So that you can avoid this serious disease.

Points to remember  to avoid Thyroid:

  • Give up laziness and do some physical activity

  • Try to avoid stress as stress gives a chance to aggravate thyroid disorders,

  • Avoid drinking too much coffee, the epinephrine and norepinephrine present in coffee stimulate the thyroid. So it is better to stay away from it.

Avoidable food in Thyroid disease:

  • Vegetable ghee

  • Red Meat

- Vegetable Ghee: Intake of vegetable Ghee should be reduced because hydrogen is being used in its manufacturing which eliminates good cholesterol and promotes bad which leads to the enlargement of thyroid.

- Red Meat: Many health experts feel that cholesterol and saturated fat are high in red meat. Due to this the weight increases rapidly. The weight of those with thyroid increases very fast in the same way and by eating red meat, thyroid people start complaining of bloating in the body.

- Alcohol: Overuse of alcohol & beer etc can shoot up  the risk of osteoporosis also increases.

- Caffeine: Restlessness and sleep disturbances due to over consumption of caffeine can increase the thyroid related problems.

- Foods with iodine: Thyroid glands produce thyroid hormone by taking iodine from our body, so if you are hypothyroid, keep a lifetime distance from foods that are high in iodine. Completely Ignore Seafood and Iodized Salt.

According to American report:

According to the American Thyroid Association, approximately 20 million Americans suffer from some form of thyroid, yet 60 percent do not know they have the problem as well. This suggests that the thyroid is really important.
