Swine-Flu is a type of infection usually caused by the swine influenza A virus (H1N1). H1N1 type A influenza is a viral infection that originally spread from pigs to humans but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. This virus can spread from person to person. When a person suffering from this disease sneezes, other people also start suffering from it.

How can we recognize the swine flu symptoms?

The symptoms of this disease are similar to those of seasonal fever, which is also called viral fever. Its symptoms include cough, sore throat and body aches. If you are sick or have flu-like symptoms, you can still take care of yourself by staying at home. This virus grows rapidly in a cold and can be contagious. Exposure to open air increases ventilation in our lungs and thereby reduces the risk of infection. However, it is better not to venture out in very foggy and polluted weather. In people who have asthma and diabetes, their symptoms may worsen. If symptoms such as blockage of breath, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness or confusion are observed, the person should contact the doctor immediately.

Symptoms of Swine-Flu

Most of the symptoms of swine flu are very similar to those of common influenza as :

Fever

Headache

Chills

Cough

Sneezing

Sore Throat

Nasal passage block

Chills

Diarrhoea

Tiredness

Runny/Stuffy Nose

Watery Red Eyes

Causes of Swine-Flu:

Swine flu is a respiratory illness caused by the swine influenza virus or SIV. The swine flu pandemic was caused by the H1N1 subtype SIV. However, other subtypes H1N2, H1N3, H3N1, H3N2 and H2N3 can also cause the disease. The virus is called H1N1 because it mainly showed two types of antigens, hemagglutinin 1 and neuraminidase.

Modes of transmission of Swine-Flu:

The mode of transmission of swine flu is very similar to that of other flu. One can also become infected with swine flu if you come into contact with virus-laden droplets that circulate in the air after an infected person coughs and sneezes. Moreover touching surfaces touched by an infected person or droplets infected with the H1N1 virus on those surfaces also increases your chances of becoming infected.

One can be infected with the virus up to 7 days later-

A person can contract the virus through another person one day before symptoms appear and up to 7 days after becoming ill. Bacon, ham, or any other pork product cannot cause swine flu.

What is the treatment?

Swine flu is a contagious viral infection that spreads from pigs to humans. Although pigs are the main source of infection, once it reaches humans, it spreads from person to person. The disease spread like a pandemic in the year 2009, when humans were infected for the first time. This infectious disease was declared a pandemic, when people in different continents got infected. In the 2009 pandemic, the swine flu virus affected many people on different continents.

Following tips can help keep you safe from swine flu:

1. During coughing or sneezing, always cover your face. That won't transfer the germs to your hands and then the infection will not spread to everything you touch.

2. Timely hand washing after any activity can help avoid swine flu.

3. Always use hand sanitizer when shaking hands with someone or touching a door handle, keyboard or someone's table.

4. Before usage make sure you are washing fruits and vegetables with water.

5. Moving around  crowded places can be avoided. If you go to crowded places, wear a flu mask.

6. Should consult a doctor immediately if you develop common symptoms of swine flu.

Take special care of hand hygiene-

The easiest way to avoid microorganisms i.e. viruses and bacteria is to wash your hands several times a day. If possible, wash your hands with lukewarm water and if washing is not possible, use sanitizer several times a day.

Precautions to be taken during travel-

If you use public transport or go to crowded places, please stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing to avoid infection.

Sun basking proves to beneficial for having vitamin D-

Some vitamin D is also absorbed from sunlight. Being in sunlight for 45 minutes from 12 noon to 3 pm can be of great help to absorb enough vitamin D.

Vaccination for Swine-Flu :

The study found that pregnant women and young people are most susceptible to adult swine flu and the risk is also higher in the elderly population and pregnant women in general. Vaccinations have been developed to fight the disease. People who are travelling can often take these vaccinations to avoid infection. When a person goes to the doctor with symptoms of viral fever, the doctor takes swabs of secretions from the nose or throat, by which the symptoms of swine flu are detected and like any other viral infection, the infection lasts for about a week.
