Punjab Government organized state level function on Statistics day on the occasion of Birthday of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis at ICSSR Auditorium, Panjab University Chandigarh. Finance Minister, Parminder Singh Dhindsa graced the function as chief guest. In his speech, finance minister said that in an era of information accurate data is required for framing development and citizen-centric policies and economic and statistical organization, Punjab is giving valuable data and information to state government in this regard. He said that latest data also enables the formulation of future strategies for policies on socio-economic issues of the state. Mr. Dhindsa appreciates the initiatives of the statistical organization and wishes them a great success in their endeavour. He assures the department to give all possible help to fill the vacant posts and to solve other issues.
On this occasion finance minister also released quarterly news letter of the department. An exhibition of important statistical books of the department is also be organized and some important books of the department released by Mr. Dhindsa.Mr. Parmod Kumar, Chairman Governance Reforms Commission also shared his views regarding the importance of statistical data for various fields. Economic advisor M.L. Sharma said that Prof. Mahalanobis was a noted statistic scientist who established Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. He said that Prof. Mahalanobis also played a significant role to establish Central Statistical Organization and National Sample Survey Organization. Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation have been observing June 29 as ‘Statistics Day’ throughout the country since 2006, he added.
