With Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday kick-started free bus service for women passengers in government buses, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori launched the free bus travelling facility in Jalandhar district.Participating in a state-level virtual inauguration event at District Administrative Complex, the deputy commissioner said that with effect from April 1, 2021 all women are eligible to travel in government-owned busses free of cost. He said that the decision has been taken by the Punjab government to ensure hassle-free, safe and reliable travelling facilities to women adding this move would leave a ever-lasting impact on our society, especially from the stand-point of women empowerment.Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries Suman, a local resident lauded the efforts of Captain Government for ensuring free and safe transportation services to women. While sharing her personal experiences, she said this move would encourage lakhs of women across the state to go to far-flung areas for jobs in the safest bus services and that too at free-of-cost.Divulging more, the DC said that the beneficiaries need to carry her ID proof of Punjab domicile and they will be provided tickets displaying zero fare. He added that now the panic button has also been installed in the buses, which could be used by women passengers in case of any trouble. The necessary assistance would be provided to those pressing panic as requisite arrangements have already been made at the backend such as control room, CCTV cameras at bus stands, and vehicle tracking system in buses.
