Kapurthala administration's efforts help to improve Hb level in anemic girls

Deputy Commissioner Kapurthala Deepti Uppal envisaged a healthy teenage girl population with zero anemia supplementing the state's efforts towards an anemia free Punjab.The noble initiative of the DC has started showing positive results as with constant medical intervention and school supervision, Hemoglobin levels of many girls have increased which was being tested at every month-end.Deputy Commissioner informed that Under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Hemoglobin Testing and Iron Fortification program was conceptualized in Kapurthala in the month of December in Block Nadala wherein on pilot basis for teenage girls.She added that till December 31, as many as 159 girls were tested for Hemoglobin via digital prick testing Hb meters and out of these 143 girls were found anemic with Hb levels of 11 and under. She added that after the end of January 2021, the Hb level of 78 girls have been improved besides showing positive signs in terms of physical parameters.Deepti Uppal said that taking serious note of the situation, the district administration has taken several steps including counseling sessions held with students along with their parents and diet charts provided with a weekly dietary schedule. She added that Iron and other Dietary supplements (chana gur ladoo) were also provided to anemic girls by the district administration. She said that regular monitoring was also being undertaken along with bi-weekly counseling by respective SMOs along with ASHA and Anganwadi Workers.DC Uppal informed that Iron fortification diet packets were also distributed to 159 girls at GSSS Nangal Lubana today in the presence of SDM Balbir Singh, SMO and other dignitaries."Iron is necessary for teenage girls due to continuous loss of blood during menstruation. Hence a regular iron rich diet is needed in teenage girls to prevent symptoms of anemia like fatigue, loss of energy, weakness, dizziness, cold hand/ feet etc," DC said.
