To mark the auspicious occasion of the Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti, Punjab Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister Mr Bharat Bhushan Ashu today formally launched the Dr BR Ambedkar Post Matric SC Scholarship scheme in district Ludhiana.Participating in the district-level Valmiki Jayanti celebrations organised at Bachat Bhawan, here today, Mr Bharat Bhushan Ashu distributed Post Matric SC Scholarship Certificates to five SC students.He was also accompanied by MLA Mr Surinder Dawar, Mayor Mr Balkar Singh Sandhu, PSIDC Chairman Mr KK Bawa, PLIDB Chairman Mr Pawan Dewan, PMIDB Chairman Mr Amarjit Singh Tikka, Punjab Youth Development Board Chairman Mr Sukhwinder Singh Bindra, Deputy Commissioner Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma, MC Commissioner Mr Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal, ADC (Jagraon) Mrs Neeru Katyal Gupta, Mr Ashwani Sahota, Mr Naresh Dhigan, Mr Jarnail Singh Shimlapuri, besides several others.
While speaking to media persons on the occasion, Mr Ashu said that the Capt Amarinder Singh led Punjab government is committed to the welfare of the SC community. He said that the state scholarship scheme will ensure that poor SC students get free higher education, which the Government of India had unfairly deprived them of with its abrupt withdrawal of central aid of Rs 800 crore to the state. He said that the Dr BR Ambedkar Post Matric SC Scholarship, being launched by the Punjab government without any financial contribution from the Centre, will provide 100% fee waiver for SC students to give them net savings of about Rs 550 crore.He informed that this scheme would benefit more than 3 lakh poor SC students in the state annually, and would involve no upfront payment by these students to government/private educational institutions. The institutes will provide free education to SC students under the scheme against direct subsidy from the state government, besides the students will also get monthly stipend to buy books, uniforms etc.
