A 27 members diagnostic team led by Dr. Rupinder Bakshi working round the clock in Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratory, Government Medical College PATIALA, is the backbone of battle against CORONA VIRUS.Though they all are not looking in frontline but these CORONA Warriors are the unsung heroes who are striving hard to diagnose the plenty of samples daily.Dr. Rupinder Bakshi, Associate Professor and Principal Investigator, Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratory (part of laboratory network under ICMR and DHR, New Delhi) said that this state of art laboratory at Government Medical College was functional since 2010. Initially, we had the daily viral load capacity of 40 and it was very hard to diagnose the n number of COVID samples, we were collecting daily from Eight Districts of Punjab.The lab started COVID-19 testing from March 8 and to begin with 40 samples per day. Now we are testing 4500-5000 samples per day which is highest number in Punjab and in North India, She added. So far VRDL Patiala has tested 1,73000 samples.She was also appointed as State Nodal Officer for COVID-19 testing Punjab by ICMR New Delhi in January this year.VRDL Patiala caters eight districts of Malwa region of Punjab i.e Patiala, Fathegarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Ropar, SBS Nagar, Mohali, Sangrur and Mansa, she added.The CORONA Warriors besider her, who are working in the lab include Two Senior Residents, Five Research Scientists, 14 Lab Technicians are Five Lab Attendants. And luckily, no staff member of VRDL lab has got infected with COVID-19 till date.
