Municipal Council Barnala is not working round the clock to ensure clean Barnala, but also managing its wet waste by converting it into organic fertilizer and increase soil fertility. Deputy Commissioner Barnala Mr Tej Partap Singh Phoolka said that 106 pits have been constructed in the Municipal council Barnala where composting of wet garbage is done.EO Municipal Council Barnala Manpreet Singh Sidhu said that under Swachh Bharat Mission 106 compost pits were constructed. Of these 64 are at the sanitation office. These are 10 feet long, 5 feet wide and 3 feet deep. RS 6000 have been spent on construction of each pit.The pits have been constructed at total cost or Rs 3.84 lacs wherein the wet waste collected from entire city is stored.He added that the segregated wet and dry waste is collected door to door and brought to these pits where it is composted and converted into organic fertilizers.For this 250 safai sewaks and 114 rickshaws have been deputed to collect door to door collection. Sanitary Inspector Ankush Singla and Chief sanitary inspector Vishan Dass said that that extra garbage which is not compostable, is further sold off, while plastic etc is given to cement factory. He appealed the city residents to segregate waste before giving to safai sewaks.
Forest dept given 9 quintals of organic fertilizer
Resource Person Swachh Bharat Mission Parul Garg said that one compost pit holds 5000 kg wet garbage, which creates 2000 kg fertilizer. The fertilizer is seived and packed. Its testing has been done by the horticulture department. 9 quintals of fertilizer has been given to forest department.
