Diamonds have always been glorified as a symbol of love and how they are so extremely rare and precious. Mined diamonds have been celebrated all around the world because of such advertisements that claim how rare these diamonds are. They make for pieces of investment by families and are bought on special occasion like marriage. They are passed down from generation to generation and have a lot of sentiments and values attached to it. However, most of these have grown as a result of marketing strategies by the top diamond companies in the world. While some may be true, most of them are not and has led us to believe in things that could have easily been avoided otherwise.

We are here to bust some myths about diamonds that you may have grown up on all your life. The next time you come across new pendant designs with diamonds in them, remember what you learn here.

They are not actually that rare – the reason why it may seem that diamonds are rare is because the diamond industry controls the supply and availability of diamonds in the market. This leads to a false sense of scarcity and a chance for them to sell the ones at higher prices. There are a large number of diamonds mined every year, but they are stockpiled instead of all being led out in the market at once. The next time you come across the latest gold necklace set designs with pricethat is obnoxious because of the diamonds in it, remember this little trick being played on you.

Mining is not good for the environment – diamonds retracted from the earth due to mining have in fact left behind such large pits that they can be seen from outer space. There is also a lot of slavery involved with the workers who actually mine these diamonds. There is no saying that the diamond you are wearing currently is a result of permanent damage to the planet or is a result of slavery.

Diamonds have not always been a symbol of love – diamonds started featuring in engagement rings after the 1930s. This happened because of an ad campaign by one of the top diamond retailers who wanted to increase the sale of diamonds. This is how they came to be considered as a symbol of love. However, this is really not true but is in fact a very cleverly crafted advertising strategy. It is okay if you do not want to give your better half diamonds. It does not mean that you love them any less.

There are other options available – with the advancement of technology, there are many other options available in diamonds apart from buying mined ones. There are lab-grown diamonds, heirloom-quality simulants to moissanite. They are equally of good quality which means there really is no reason for you to buy one that is possibly a result of slavery.

There are no sacrifices required to get that diamond – there is no reason to sacrifice things in your daily life just to get that 2-carat diamond for the engagement ring. It is okay to buy a smaller one. It does not make your love any less or speaks ill about you. It is a harmful mindset that we as a society should break. The next time someone tries to educate you on how rare diamonds are, turn the tables and you give them a lesson instead. And know that you are better off than to fall for the various push strategies that all the diamond companies seem to have adopted nowadays.
