Heavy penalties to be imposed on Municipal councils not abiding by NGT rules

Chairman of the Monitoring Committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and former Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Jasbir Singh directed EOs of all Municipal Councils to fully compliance the Solid Waste Management Rule-2016. In the case of non-implementation urban Municipal Councils have to bear heavy fine after March 31, 2020.Chairman Justice Jasbir Singh presided over the meeting of district level special task force here today. He said that Municipal councils over the population of 10 lakhs, have to be imposed fine 10 lakhs per month, in the case of population between 5 to 10 lakhs, fine will be 5 lakhs and in the case of small Municipal Councils fine to be imposed 1 lakh per month. This process would be implemented from 1 April. He also said that EOs that will fail to implement NGT guidelines will have remarks registered in their ACRs, these orders have been received by the National Green Tribunal.Meanwhile, Senior Member of the Committee and former Chief Secretary of Punjab Mr. S C Aggarwal and Mr. Babu Ram have reviewed the arrangements of waste management under the Municipal Councils of Sangrur district and issued necessary instructions. They directed the SDMs to regularly review the progress of the Municipal Councils officials and ensure that regular review meetings were held in the district level Special Task Force on the subject.He directed the health authorities to take appropriate steps for setting up an effluent treatment plant in the concerned health centres in the district by June 30.On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Mr. Ghanshyam Thori directed all the Executive Officers to strictly follow the directions of the Tribunal. On this occasion the SSP Dr. Sandeep Garg, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Tripathi, Additional Deputy Commissioner (D) Rajinder Batra, SDMs and other were present.
