Sportswomen competing in the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2020) continued to deliver high-level, edge-of-the-seat performances on Tuesday (Feb 4). Emirati athletes sustained supremacy across categories of basketball and volleyballand finished their day with a gold medal in archery.
Archery
On the final day of the archery competitions, the top spots on the Team Olympic round finals were dominated by GCC clubs. The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club archery team consisting of Maha Al Hosani, Amna Al Awadi and Hassa Al Awadi, clinched the gold medal;the Al Bahrain Club bagged the silver; while KSA’s Riyadh Club claimed the bronze.In the Individuals Olympic round, Bahrain clinched the gold as well as bronze medals, by Mariam Issa Najmand Sara Marzouq, respectively. The silver was claimed by Iraqi archer Rand Al Mashanadi.
Basketball
Sharjah Women’s Sports Club finished their first basketball match against KSA’s Elite Athletes Club yesterday with a 23-point lead. The first three quarters of the game were dominated by Sharjah’s basketballers. The Saudi team made a comeback in the fourth, which was some kind of redemption but wasn’t enough. The scoreboard was on the UAE’s side with a final tally of 85–62.Tunisia’s Al Amal Sportif and Al Watan Al Qabali built on the great first impression they’ve made in the match against Algeria’s Le Groupement Sportif des Pétroliers. Playing the last basketball game on Tuesday, both teams had their eyes on the prize. A game that could have been anyone’s ended with Tunisia winning by a 3-point difference. The final score was 67–64. The Tunisian team has been primed for a contest with the UAE’s Sharjah Women’s Sports Club today (Wednesday).
Volleyball
UAE's Al Wasl Club continued their victory march on Tuesday, winning a hard-fought 1:14 hour match they played against Bahrain’s Al Ahli Club. The final scores displayed at the SWS volleyball stadium reflected what a nailbiting 3-setter it was; final tallies were 76–60.Egypt’s Sporting Sports Club registered a victory in the volleyball finals they played yesterday,recovering from losing the first set to their Tunisian opponents from Club Sportif Sfaxien.Egypt made a grand comeback, winning the next three sets in an intense 1:50 hour game of volleyball. The excellent skills and sporting spirit of the Egyptian team culminated in an impressive 92–83 win for them.The tournament continuesuntil February 12, 2020, and is organised by Sharjah Women’s Sports (SWS).
