Kashmir, the land of mountains, fresh air, flowers, and lakes is a delight to visit. Each season has something to offer a visitor and if you are ever in the mood to see this corner of the country in the winter, you are in for a treat of a lifetime. Having lived in snowy climes, I recommend visiting this piece of heaven as an absolute must, at least once in your life. The quiet of a snowy day by the fireplace, going skiing, riding snowmobiles or visiting the Zanskar river for a trek across the ice-bound river, there are so many things one can do in Kashmir. Best of all, don’t forget to get a taste of this region’s famous cuisine – especially the winter dishes.

Tips on preparing for the trip

Preparing for a winter trip is a little trickier than traveling in other months. Winter lasts from December to early March (give or take a few weeks based on weather patterns).  Temperatures can dip to below zero C and having the right clothing and shoes can make the trip enjoyable.

Since winter in Kashmir is not exactly a tourist season, you are sure to get great deals on hotels and cab services. Be bold and make the trip for an unforgettable experience.

Be prepared for flight delays due to weather.

Expect road closures due to heavy snow or even the occasional landslide.

If you are booking your trip through a travel agent, make sure to ask about electric blankets and heating amenities at the hotel you will stay in.

If you are going to stay for a week or more, make sure that you avail a convenient and affordable Katra taxi service and a driver who is familiar with the area. Booking transport in advance is key – you don’t want to go to paradise and not have a way to get around and see the sights.

Though there are snow clearing machines, some areas are easier to reach and travel around than others. The best example of this is Pahalgam vs. Gulmarg.

Check before you book your trip – if there are curfews in some areas you are visiting, you may not be able to buy necessities or even souvenirs. You can bet on some great deals at local artisan stores during the winter.

Do your research online and buy jackets, shoes and other accessories that will help you stay warm and comfortable in sub-zero temperatures.

Yes, all of these tips may sound daunting on the face of it, you will not regret making that trip once you get to Kashmir.

A brief list of places to visit

Now that some of the essential to-dos are out of the way, here is a look at some of the places you could visit while in Kashmir.

Dal Lake, Srinagar – This is one experience you should not pass up. If you are adventurous enough, spend a couple of nights on a houseboat and take a Shikara ride.

Gulmarg – The ski slopes of Gulmarg attract skiers from around the world. If you like adventure and speed, skiing is a sport you could try out. Try a few lessons before hitting the slopes.  If you want to try something else, then get in touch with local operators and find out what you can do.  One activity that is a must is a cable car ride – don’t miss out on the spectacular scenery and clear blue skies in the winter.

Zanskar Gorge – if you do like living on the edge, walking on the ice-bound Zanskar river may be just the thing for you. Do note that this river is at an altitude and may not be for those who are not at peak fitness.

Sonmarg – want to see a glacier? Don’t be surprised that this charming town is both a summer and winter delight.

Vaishno Devi – for those true believers who want to make a trip to this holy shrine, there is no better way to do it than to book a comfortable chauffer driver cab from Katra to Srinagar. The shrine is open even in the winter and doughty souls can get to see the Deity. Dressing well for in woolens and other winter gear will see you through with a minimum of discomfort.

While the locations mentioned above do not extensively cover all there is to see in Kashmir, it is a start. Don’t let the weather stop you from visiting and experiencing the beauty and allure of this part of the world.
