A fourteen days workshop on Instructional Strategies for Outcome Based Language Teaching for Teacher Educators under Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teacher and Training concluded.The theme of this workshop was to orient the participants with innovative and creative teaching strategies; defining outcome based learning objectives, prepare teaching learning material in languages with ICT and design activity based language classroom . The workshop was an amalgamation of lectures as well as extensive hands on training.Prof. Vashnava Narang (retd) Centre for linguistics, CL, JNU, New Delhi, was the guest of honour on this occasion. While congratulating the team of SOE and Department of Education for the innovative initiative to train the teacher educators and teachers in the instructional strategies on language teaching, she reiterated that in contemporary times, language corpora has become an indispensable resource in almost all the domains of linguistics and language technology including both theoretical and applicational aspects of linguistics. The major practices of the day are to develop corpora in digital form with a large number of language texts collected from our day-to-day use of language; process and analyse these texts with modern computer technology; extract new data, information, and insights from analysis of texts; and use them in various domains of human knowledge.Prof Amit Kauts, Project Coordinator, School of Education while welcoming the guests and participants elucidated that developing language skills require conscious effort of harnessing listening, speaking, reading and writing; exploring language comprises conceptualization of use of morphological items, basic sentence structure and use of cohesive devices. Supporting learning stresses on language practitioners’ deliberate efforts to help learners manipulate rules to express ideas and emotions both in oral and written communication in diverse contexts. He further reiterated that quality language teaching and learning require the teachers to be well versed with diverse learning styles, individual strategies, intelligence questions, multiple intelligences incorporated in the pedagogy of teaching compatible with the developmental and linguistic needs of students.Dr. Deepa Sikand Kauts, Head, Department of Education, emphasized that language is a powerful tool not only for classroom teaching but social transition. She discussed the emerging issues and the challenges faced by the teachers, including multilingualism, accepting and adapting to the e-learning technology and online learning platforms. Emphasis on learners’ efforts on being aware of their progress by developing linguistic sensibility through the tasks of input-providing and output-prompting, from explicit explanation to implicit conceptualization and vice-versa is crucial in language learning Twenty two participants from different institutes of education and language teachers from states of Punjab(rural & urban), Maharashtra,Delhi and Karnataka formed an interactive and collaborative group of trainees.Engagement and active participation in various activities were conducted in workshop sessions led by noted language experts from apex bodies including NCERT,NIEPA and JNU. On this occasion, Dr Ganesh, Manohar patil and Dr Sanjam shared their experiences during their sojourn at Guru Nanak Dev University as the participants of the workshop.Dr. Franky Rani thanked the guests, participants of the workshop for active participation and successful completion of the workshop.
