In times of snow, Poplar trees pose new threat to lives in Kashmir

The government has failed to cut poplar trees that have posed a threat to lives and property at several places in Srinagar and city outskirts.The last week’s massive snowfall has sent shockwaves among the inhabitants of several places after huge destruction to the property and electricity infrastructure due to fall of poplar trees in the city and various districts of Kashmir.According to wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the residents of several areas of the city have written to the concerned authorities for cutting the poplar trees in their respective areas citing that these trees are posing a big threat to human lives and also the property. Interestingly, some earlier orders for cutting of poplar trees have not been implemented by the concerned authorities despite repeated reminders.A government order was passed for cutting of poplar trees, however, the same was not implemented at several places. Similarly, as order was passed by the Tehsildar BK Pora for cutting down of Poplar trees at Estate Aribagh, BK Pora on May 8, 2019. However, the same order was not implemented till date, which is giving sleepless nights to the locals there.“The concerned Tehsildar has written a written to local police station for providing security at the time of cutting down of trees, after local residents have approached the authorities for cutting down of trees, however, the same order was not implemented till date,” the local residents of Naseemabad Sector B of B K Pora told KNO.These trees can consume precious lives anytime in the future if these are not chopped forthwith, they added. Similarly, at several places in the city, the government has not cut poplar trees despite repeated reminders to the concerned authorities. The locals appeal the Lt Governor Girish Chander Murmu led administration to take the immediate action, so that precious lives could be saved as Kashmir braces for back to back spells of snowfall in the wake of early winter.
