There will be no change in the nomenclature of Jammu and Kashmir police and the ranks presently enjoyed by the top officials will continue to stay intact till deliberations over the matter are finalized in New Delhi, top officials in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revealed to wire service Kashmir News Observer (KNO).One of the officials disclosed that it was after unanimous consensus at a meeting of top MHA officials in New Delhi that Ladakh Union Territory (UT) was given a separate Inspector General of Police (IGP). “As Ladakh is a separate UT, there was a need to appoint separate IG who would report to the Director General of Police (Dilbagh Singh), who oversees both UTs—Ladakh and J&K,” the official said.He said that in J&K UT, DGP, IGP and ADGP will continue to hold their posts and ranks till deliberations on changing the nomenclature of police is finalized in New Delhi by the top officials of MHA. “The major and primary focus of MHA was to give more teeth to the J&K police that has more than one lakh work force,” he said. “Prime Minister Narendera Modi was also keen to make J&K police personnel at par with the Central forces including CRPF, Sahastra Seema Bal, ITB and BSF. That has been done and there is no disparity now.”As far the nomenclature of the J&K police, that is—whether to change the ranks of DGP, IGP and ADGPs on the lines of Delhi UT, hectic deliberations are on and will take some time to finalise. “For now, there is no change in the ranks and all the officials in J&K police will be known by the ranks they already have,” another officer in MHA, told KNO.He said that there are some views that the ranks of police officers in J&K be similar to the UT Delhi where there is a Delhi Police Commissioner (DCP) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who is second in command. “We have not taken any call on applying this model in J&K as of now,” the official said.He said main focus will be on strengthening the J&K police on all fronts given the fact that the force has already proved its mettle on multiple fronts including maintaining law and order and combatting militancy.
