In a path breaking initiative, the district administration today pulled up its socks for ensuring 24X7 surface water supply for the residents of Jalandhar city by year 2021.Chairing a meeting here at district administrative complex, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma accompanied by Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Jalandhar Mr Diperva Lakra said that in order to reduce pressure on the under ground water as the water table was depleting very fastly 24X7 surface water supply would be provided to Jalandhar residents from Jalandhar Irrigation Canal near Adampur. He said that a water treatment plant with capacity of 275 Million Litres Per Day (MLD) and 90 MLD would be set in first and second phase. Mr Sharma said that 275 MLD would cater to need of the city by year 2036 and the additional 90 MLD would cater to the need of city residents by 2051.The Deputy Commissioner and Municipal Corporation Commissioner said that in the first phase 113 cusec of surface water would be supplied to the city residents daily to cater their needs by year 2036 and subsequently it would be enhanced to 149 cusecs by 2051.They said that the total cost of project was nearly Rs 890 crores and 100 acres of land would be required for this project. They said that in the first phase 66 acres of land would be required and 34 acres of land would be required in the second phase.The Deputy Commissioner and Municipal Corporation Commissioner said that the land would be used for construction of Water Treatment Plant and other infrastructure for supply of water. They said that administration has finalized the land in three villages and the process of acquiring the interested persons has also been set in motion. It may be recalled that the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar supplies water supply to 1,52, 844 recorded households in the city for 8-12 hours in the day.On the occasion Chief Executive Officer Smart City Mr. Jitendra Jorwal, Sub Divisional Magistrate Dr. Jai Inder Singh, District Revenue Officer Mr. Jashanjeet Singh, Chief Engineer Water Supply and Sewerage Board Mr. Harjinder Singh, Executive Engineer Mr. Jatin Vasudeva, Sub Divisional Officer Mr. Gaggan and others were also present.
