The tall claims of the administration in Centre about the construction of toilets in educational institutions especially in the girls’ colleges and schools in Jammu and Kashmir have fallen flat as 52 percent schools in the State have not proper toilet facilities for the female students. Recently, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that the government has constructed over 11 lakh toilets across India. However, the situation in Kashmir is different as most of the toilets constructed in schools are of no use.According to wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the officials have already admitted that absence of toilets for girls has led to the sudden decrease in the admission of female students in various schools. Annual Statistics of Education Report (ASER), a copy of which is available with KNO, reveals that at least 30.2 percent schools in the State have no separate provision for girls' toilet, which reveals a decrease as compared to 34.4 percent in the year 2014.The report further revealed that 7.4 percent schools in the State have separate provision but those are locked. It further added that 14.3 percent schools across Jammu and Kashmir also have separate provision for girls' toilet but they are not in use.The percentage of total locked and not in use female toilet facility in the erstwhile State in 2014 were 10.0 percent and 8.9 percent respectively. The report also stressed that the separate provision for girls’ toilet facility remains under lock and not in use across the schools of Jammu and Kashmir about 48.2 percent. The not in use toilets in 2014 were 46.7 percent. The report which also mentioned the percentage of general toilets reveal that total in use toilets across JK schools is 73.0 percent, which was 58.1 percent in 2014.It further added that 4.6 percent of schools have no toilet facility and 22.5 percent school have toilet facility but are not in use. (KNO)
