Continuing its efforts to maintain cleanliness, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Dr G N Itoo, today launched a special cleanliness drive at the tourist destination Gulmarg under ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ drive.The DC also flagged of an awareness rally in which various stakeholders including officers/officials of Health, Education, Judiciary, MC members and other prominent sections of the society, participated. The rally went through several areas during which participants were holding placards and banners depicting various slogans and messages about sanitation.Speaking on the occasion, the DC highlighted the aim of the campaign and said that it is meant to sensitize and bring behavioural change among the people with regard to the sanitation and cleanliness.He said that several sanitation oriented activities shall be carried out throughout the district under the sanitation drive. Moreover, he added that the campaign is in consonance with the ambitious mission of Prime Minister regarding the eradication the plastic waste from the country.Emphasizing upon the people to avoid the use of polythene and plastic, DC that plastic pollution has hazardous consequences on the existence of flora and fauna. He also said that the recycling process of plastic waste shall be initiated besides an alternative for the plastic shall be explored.Meanwhile, jute carry bags were distributed free of cost among the people. The distribution was held as a move to encourage the use of such bags as an alternative of plastic ones.
