Deputy Commissioner and CEO LAHDC, Kargil Baseer ul Haq Choudhary launched Rotavirus Vaccine (RVV) for Diarrhea Prevention in children at a function held at the Immunization Section of District Hospital Kargil here today.The RVV is used to protect against rotavirus infections, which are the leading cause of severe diarrhea among the young children.The Deputy Commissioner launched the vaccine by administering RVV drops to a 2 month old child.Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kargil Dr Ibrahim Khan, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Kargil Dr Fatima Nissa, District Immunization Officer (DIO) Kargil Dr Mumtaz Ahmad, doctors, paramedical staff, health officials and general public attended the programme.Highlighting the importance of the rotavirus vaccine, the Deputy Commissioner said that the vaccine along with proper sanitation, hand washing practices, ORS and zinc supplementation will go a long way in reducing the mortality and morbidity due to diarrhea in children.The DC urged the health officials to make the public aware about the vaccine and its importance to prevent diarrhea among children besides ensuring complete and satisfactory immunization coverage in the district.He further asked the doctors and paramedical staff to create awareness about various health programmes being implemented by the government among the rural masses, particularly those residing in far-flung and inaccessible areas.Meanwhile, CMO Kargil informed that oral Rotavirus vaccine will be provided free of cost at all government health facilities including hospitals, dispensaries, public health centres, community health centres and sub-centres and would be given to 6, 10 and 14 weeks old children along with other vaccines in the routine immunization schedule.
