On the last day of the current monsoon session of Punjab Assembly on Tuesday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protested against the menace of drugs and the naked dance of unstoppable deaths due to drug overdose outside the Assembly Bhawan. The AAP MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema and Sunam MLA, Aman Arora, before the start of the session this morning, sat in a ‘dharna’ in front of the entrance gate. They resorted to raising raising slogans against the previous BJP-SAD government, and the ruling Captain government for giving more teeth to drug mafia under their respective regimes, keeping an effigy of a youth purported to have dies due to drug overdose.

Addressing the media on the occasion, Cheema said that during the 10-year long ‘misrule’ of the Badal-led government, drug mafia had flourished by leaps and bounds, saying that the Badals were behind the wanton drug use among the youth, which had assumed alarming proportions, he said, adding that the mighty drug mafia was running the nefarious trade under the patronage of politicians and police administration. He added that Captain Amarinder Singh, who had, under oath of Sri Gutka Sahib, promised the people of the state to stamp out the menace of drugs within 4 weeks of assuming power did nothing during his government’s  two and a half years’ regime. With the drugs which were available at doorsteps in various parts of the state, had ended up in the spread of certain deadly disease like AIDS / HIV.Speaking on the occasion, Aman Arora said that the spectre of deaths due drug overdose was no longer confined to young boys only. Reports revealed that during the past 2 days, two women in Bathinda and Alamgir (Ludhiana) died due to overdose of ‘chitta’ (drug) that had sounded a red alert for those at the helms of affairs. The enormity of the situation could be gauzed from such heart-wrenching incidents while the government in the saddle, like its BJP-SAD predecessors, was asleep.
