By saving guava, plum, peach, mango and pear etc. fruit varieties with fruit fly trap, the horticulture farmers of the district whereas getting poison-free fruit crops, on the other hand they have reduced input cost of horticulture and boost their economy.Elaborating more, Dr. Jaspal Singh Bhatti, Deputy Director Horticulture, Abohar said that fruit fly trap is very low cost equipment and the cost is fixed Rs.110 per trap. He said that the 16 traps are enough to cover one acre land. He said that state government is making sincere efforts to bring about crop diversification by shunning the tendency of wheat-paddy circle. For this purpose, farmers are being made aware of the advantages of pomiculture. "Now a days, the trend to establish gauva orchids is increasing, therefore the area under guava horticulture has increased in the district", he said.Dr. Bhatti acquainted horticulture farmers that during monsoon season fruit fly attack is very high on guava crop, so fruit fly traps can be used to control the fly. He said that 16 fruit traps could be laid per acre, which attract male fly and caught them. He said that trap prevents the fruit from the fly and the guava crop is prevented from deterioration and the quality of the fruit is also improved. He said that by using these environment-friendly traps, anyone can reduce the input cost of horticulture and boost his economy.Assistant Director Horticulture Dr. Tejinder Singh said that the cost has been fixed at the rate of Rs.110 per trap. Horticulture farmers could get these traps from the Horticulture Office, Tahliwala Jattan and office of the Deputy Director Horticulture, Abohar on any working day.Horticultural Development Officer (Pathology) Dr. Sukhjinder Singh and Horticultural Development Officer (Entomology) Dr. Gurjit Singh said that trap can be used on various fruit varieties such as guava, plum, peach, mango and pears, besides this, farmers can use this trap on fruit plants at their homes. They appealed to the farmers to procure fructiferous plants from the nurseries approved by the Horticulture Department or from the nurseries of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
