To commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in a big way, Deputy Commissioner Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma on Friday started a plantation drive in the Government Arts & Sports College,  Kapurthala road.Initiating the drive, Mr Sharma along with additional deputy commissioner (Development) Mr Kulwant Singh underscored the need for planting more and more trees to enhance the green cover in the district.He added that this plantation drive  is the best way to give tribute to Guru Nanak Dev Ji who had advocated the nature in his writings and was an ardent nature lover.Mr Sharma also said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s eternal message, 'Pawan Guru Pani Pita Mata Dharat Mahat', will be spread in the district to secure the environment besides ensuring ecological balance by planting trees.

He also stated said that this drive is being initiated in consonance with the commitment of the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to encourage people to plant more trees for making Punjab clean, green and pollution free by enhancing green cover in the district.He said that the plantation is set to increase the green cover in the district.He said that trees play a crucial role by conserving natural resources and improving the environment. He said that it is high time for the people to come forward and join the hands with the administration for planting saplings and upkeep them properly to enhance the green cover in the district.He claimed that it is the duty of each person to protect the environment for giving a better future to the next generations by planting saplings. Mr. Sharma exhorted the officers and employees of the government departments that each one of them must plant maximum saplings to enhance green cover in the district.On the occasion DFO Jalandhar Mr. Rajesh Gulati and other were present.
