Captain Amarinder Singh Approves Rs. 2.20 Crore For Upkeep & Maintenance Of Gaushalas To Check Stray Cattle Menace

A day after the Governor, in his address in the Vidhan Sabha, reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting the Gaushalas, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday okayed the release of Rs. 2.20 crore for the upkeep and management of cattle pounds (gaushalas) being run under the aegis of the Deputy Commissioners of the districts.The move was aimed at curbing the menace of stray cattle across the state, according to an official spokesperson, who said Rs 10 lakh had been sanctioned by the Chief Minister for each of the 22 Gaushalas in the state. The money will be used for ensuring ensure proper supply of fodder and veterinary healthcare.The Chief Minister directed all the Deputy Commissioners to make arrangements in collaboration with the Departments of Rural Development and Panchayats, Local Government and Animal Husbandry department to house the stray cattle in these cattle pounds. The step would go a long way in checking the menace fatal accidents caused by stray cattle, often resulting in toll of human lives or incapacitation of people due to grievous injuries.Notably, a four-member committee comprising Additional Chief Secretary Animal Husbandry, Principal Secretary Local Government and Principal Secretary Rural Development and Panchayats under the Chairmanship of the Chief Secretary was constituted by the Chief Minister to work out a sustainable system for running these cattle pounds in a result oriented and efficacious manner.
