Punjab Government to observe ‘30th National Road Safety Week’ all across State from 4th-10th February

Principal Secretary Transport presides over meeting with concerned department heads to review week long programmes

“The Punjab Government would observe ‘30th National Road Safety Week’ from 4th-10th February all across the state during the course of which the people would be sensitized about road safety norms.” This was disclosed here today by the Principal Secretary, Transport, Mr. K. Siva Prasad while chairing a meeting of the officers of concerned departments at the committee room of the Punjab Civil Secretariat-2 in Sector-9 in order to review the week long programmes to be held in connection with the 30th Road Safety Week.In the meeting, the Principal Secretary said that the main rationale behind the Road Safety Week is to sensitize the people of Punjab with regard to the road safety norms so as to put a stop to the road mishaps. He further said that the reason behind road mishaps is negligence and non-compliance with the road safety norms which needs to checked through initiation of a special campaign by all the departments to make the people aware to observe road safety norms.The Principal Secretary also added that the most important part of the week would be the holding of seminars by School Education as well as the Higher Education Departments in the schools as well as the colleges to spread awareness among the student community. The traffic wing officials would provide full information pertaining to the road safety regulations. He further said that more vigilance is needed at the accident prone sites besides strict action against those indulging in overloading, over speeding, red light jumping, driving sans helmet or seat belts or under the influence of drugs or those using mobile phones while driving. Special attention needs to be paid to ensure stricter compliance of the norms near schools. He also elaborated that reflectors would be installed upon the vehicles especially those trollers which fetch sugarcane to the sugar mills.Mr. K. Siva Prasad further said that the week would begin on 4th February which would be followed by the functions at various District Headquarters. After the conclusion of the week, a function would be organized in each district in which those rendering yeoman’s contribution in the road safety sector would be felicitated. He also said that the NGOs active in the field of road safety would also be a part of the week. The Principal Secretary directed the representatives of all departments to make sure that the works allotted be carried out with full diligence so as to make the week a great success.Among others present on the occasion included the State Transport Commissioner Mr. Dilraj Singh, Special Secretary Health Department Mr. Puneet Goyal, DPI School Education Department (Secondary Education) Mr. Sukhjit Singh, Assistant Transport Officer Mr. Sukhwinder Singh, Deputy Director Higher Education Mr. Ashok Lohgarhi, DSP Traffic Wing Punjab Police Mr. Gursharanjit Singh, Traffic Advisor Mr. Navdeep Aseeja and Public Relations Officer Mr. Navdeep Singh Gill from Information and Public Relations Department.
