CGC Landran celebrates Army Day with great fervour

Students collect and contribute Rs 86,000 to AWWA

Commemorating the glorious legacy of the Indian Army, Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) Landran celebrated Army Day in its premises. The event sought to encourage girl students to join the elite Indian Army as also to raise funds to be contributed to Army War widows through Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), Western Command. The students collected and contributed Rs 86,000 towards this cause.Distinguished dignitaries gracing the occasion included Lt. Gen (Retd.) J.S. Cheema, (PVSM, AVSM, VSM), Lt. Gen (Retd.) G.S. Dhillon, (PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM), Brig. (Retd.) Pradeep Sharma, Lt. Col. (Retd.) U.S. Gill (SM), Major (Retd.) Priya Jhingan, Brig. Sanjoy Ghosh (YSM), Col. Avnish Sharma, Chairman, Sainik Welfare Board, Chandigarh), Col. I.S. Multani, AG, AWWA, Col. BS Thakur and CGC Landran’s top management.The event saw enthusiastic participation from more than 500 students who sat in rapt attention as the distinguished guests regaled them with inspirational tales. They invoked the youth to inculcate in themselves qualities of a true warrior which include courage, persistence, perseverance, character, leadership, and love for one’s motherland which they emphasised would help them excel in any field and profession. 

Patriotic slogans, songs, motivating speeches punctuated with huge rounds of applause marked the occasion. AWWA had also set up a special stall in CGC Landran displaying an array of products handcrafted by the Army War Widows. Their sheer creativity was showcased in beautifully embroidered handkerchiefs, colourful candles, Kurtis, cloth-cases to hold daily use items, among a host of others products.The ceremony commenced with a lamp lighting ceremony followed by addresses by the honourable chief guests to the assembled gathering. Students of the college put up dance performances and poetic recitations immersed in patriotic fervour.Paying rich tributes to the country’s brave warriors and the distinguished guests, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman CGC Landran and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, President CGC Landran said, “Occasions such as these help inculcate patriotic spirit among students and sensitize them towards their duties towards the nation.” They further laid emphasis on the vitality of making students socially driven individuals adding that the institution was committed to organizing more such events in the times to come.Celebrated annually, Army Day commemorates the day Lieutenant General K M Cariappa took over as Commander-in-Chief of India from the British. The day is observed to honour the brave soldiers of the Indian Army who risk and sacrifice their lives to guard our country’s frontiers.
