Parts of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district observed a complete shutdown against the installation of a new Army Camp at Redwani area of the district.The call for shutdown was forwarded by locals who alleged that there are 4 Army Camps within the radius of 6 kilometers.Reports said that all the shops and business establishments remained shut while skeletal movement of transport was observed on the roads.According to locals new army camp has come up in Redwani area where soldiers of 1st Rashtriya Rifles of Indian Army and Special Operations Group personnel have been stationed. They said the army camp was established without the permission from district administration. “There are now four army camps within the radius of 6 kilomtres at Khudwani, Redwani, Rampora and Frisal Kulgam.Since the camp was established, clashes have been erupting in the area on a daily basis, following alleged vandalism by the soldiers stationed there.They said on Friday evening after the clashes, Government Forces vandalized property. This sparked complete shutdown in the parts of Kulgam district on Saturday.Reports said that local youth hit to roads and staged a massive protest demanding removal of the newly erected army camp. Reports added that youth pelted stones on Forces who retaliated by firing tear-smoke shells.A police official on condition of anonymity said that the camp has been established to curb militancy in the adjoining areas.
