Contractual Staff working with the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act Wednesday staged a protest here in Press Enclave Srinagar denouncing the new order under which the annual extension of MGNREGA Contractual Staff would be approved by the concerned block officers.They said that the current in-charge Secretary to Government has reversed the earlier circular issued five years back by the then Commissioner/Secretary to Government.They threatened mass agitation if the order is not revoked by the Department for they fear this new diktat will be another source for greasing the palms of their Block and District Officers.“We don’t worry about the circular as we always perform up to the mark. But, we have apprehensions that officers will use this circular to extract bribe from us. This circular will leave us on the mercy of Block and District officers,” President MGNREGA Employees Association Jan Muhammad told CNS.“Instead of framing a policy for all of us the Department is deceitfully trying to throw us out of the Department. Is this our reward for working with dedication and tirelessly on paltry salary,” the protesters said in unison.They demanded revocation of the order at an earliest. (CNS)
