Chairman Legislative Council Haji Anayat Ali, Minister for Cooperatives Chering Dorjay and Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC, Kargil Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan today inaugurated a mega-plantation drive in the district by planting saplings at Council Secretariat Kurbathang, District Police Lines Kargil and Government Degree College Kargil.Deputy Commissioner Kargil Vikas Kundal and Divisional Forest Officer Kargil/in-charge plantation drive Muhammad Ali besides officers of the civil and police administration were also present on the occasion. During the plantation drive organized by the District Administration and Forest Division Kargil in connection with the World Environment Day 2018, 115371 saplings were planted simultaneously across the district as per the annual action plan set under District Plan, CAMPA and CAT this year. Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman LC while complimenting the District Administration and Forest Division Kargil for having organized the plantation drive expressed hope that the initiative will go a long way in generating awareness among the masses about the importance of planting trees for mitigating the ill-effects of climate change besides lessening the pollution levels.
Dorjay also lauded the organizers for holding the plantation drive on a large scale. The Minister said that the saplings when grown will add to the greenery of Kargil and further strengthen the commitment of the people towards a pollution free world. He also emphasized the need to prefer alternate sources of energy like hydro and solar ones besides abandoning the use of plastic.CEC Kargil Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan underlined the need of afforestation in lessening the serious ramifications of global warming and called for concerted and synergized efforts at the Governmental and private level by organizing such plantation drives and other awareness programmes.Meanwhile, elaborate arrangements were made by the District Administration and Forest Division Kargil to ensure the successful conduct of the drive. A team of 1037 personnel including nodal officers and in-charge plantation locations for different divisions were deputed across the district including Zanskar Sub Division.To carry out the simultaneous drive 21 locations for Zanskar, 17 for Sankoo, 13 for Drass, 7 for Kargil and Shargole while as 6 locations were earmarked for Chiktan area.
