Chaos and Confusion:Students protest killings in Kashmir

Students protest erupt in different parts of Kashmir Valley, even though Government had ordered the closure of schools and colleges in Southern parts of Valley while in Srinagar, a couple of colleges also remained shut on the directions of authorities.The Residency road and city centre Lal Chowk witnessed chaos and confusion while majority of the traders lowered their shutters after students protest against  recent killings in Shopian and Kangan.The students both male and female took to roads and raised massive anti-India slogans. The protesting students also chanted pro-freedom and pro-Zakir Musa slogans. A couple of students suffered injuries during clashes while Forces used tear smoke shells to disperse them. A policeman was also hit by a stone at Lal Chowk and suffered head injury.The student protests (both boys and girls) started in Regal Chowk however, the protesting students were chased away who re-assembled near Amira Kadal area of Lal Chowk and hurled rocks on forces.The routine was affected in the business hub of the summer capital as tension roused high.Students at Central University Nowgam held a peaceful protest against killings in Kashmir. Reports said that a large number of students assembled in the University premises and raised pro-freedom slogans. The protesting students denounced the unabated killings in Kashmir.

Students at Degree College Sumbal according to reports staged protest shortly after the College opened on Thursday. Reports said that a large number of students amid pro-freedom slogans took out a march. As they reached Sumbal Bridge, police stopped them, however, when they didn’t budge, police lobbed a couple of tear-smoke shells to disperse them. The students according to witnesses pelted stones of the police. Earlier, the students offered funder prayers in absentia for the slain militants and civilians killed in Kashmir since Sunday.Reports said that clashes also erupted between students and deployed forces at Amar Singh College here in uptown Srinagar. Police chased away protesting students who hit to roads to protest against Kashmir killings. Reports said that police lobbed tear-smoke shells and fired pellets to disperse the protesting student. During the protest, the students torched a police picket near Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Stadium in Srinagar.Reports said that after chased by police, some protesting students reached near the stadium and set ablaze the picket.Reports added that at least four students suffered pellet injuries during the protest.The students of Islamia College of Science and Commerce at Hawal also tried to take out a protest rally. However, forces personnel fired tear gas to disperse the protesting students.Reports said that authorities shutdown Higher Secondary School Pattan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district after a large number of student staged massive protest inside the campus. Sensing trouble, authorities closed down the institution.Minor clashes were also reported from Palhalan area of Pattan town.Kashmir University also witnessed protest against the killings.

Reports said that a large number of students assembled in University campus and raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. The students also marched in the lanes and by-lanes of the campus.The protesting students said that India is seeking pleasure in killing Kashmiris. How long we tolerate such brutal killings,” said protesting students.They said India is unwilling to address basic issue and instead it is talking about development and nationalism.At least three students suffered injuries during clashes between students and government forces in Handwara. Raising anti-India and pro-freedom slogans, the protesting youth tried to march out of the college premises. However, police and paramilitary forces swung into action and charged the students with batons to disperse them.Students from Kupwara college also protested against the killings.Amid shutdown, clashes erupted in Shopian and Dialgam areas in South Kashmir.Reports said that at least 10 protesters sustained injuries, most of them by pellets after violent protests erupted in Shirmal area of Shopian. A policeman was also injured in the clashes who was treated at district hospital Shopian. A couple of protesters were also injured in Dialgam area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district during clashes with government forces. (CNS)
