The Punjab Government would cancel all permits for trucks and buses auctioned by the previous SAD-BJP Government in a non-transparent manner, as part of the initiatives to streamline the transport sector.Announcing this while replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh pointed out that the government had already banned cartelization of truck operators/ truck unions in the State, besides notifying a new Punjab Transport Scheme 2018, which envisages grant of permits, preferably to unemployed youth, in a free and transparent manner. It also provided for an online platform to all citizens for getting driving licenses and registration of vehicles.Tax collections in this sector have increased fromRs.1548.85 crore to Rs.1912.67 crore, showing an annual increase of 23.49 percent, showing a revival, said the Chief Minister. To further improve the transport sector, the government now proposed to add a fleet of 500 new buses in the State Transport Undertakings, construct 15 new bus stands in the State, introduce GPS tracking in all public transport buses, and establish 11 Automated Test Stations for periodic inspection of commercial vehicles in the State, Captain Amarinder Singh disclosed.
