Alstom on Saturday said it has rolled out its first 12,000 HP electric locomotive and also inked a deal worth Rs 600 crore to supply power and provide coaches to Metro corporations in Mumbai, Jaipur and Chennai. The deal was announced on Saturday as French President Emmanuel Macron began his first four-day official visit to India after arriving here on Friday.According to Alstom India, the French giant will also supply power to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation and the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation.

Beside supplying power to Metro projects in Rajasthan and Maharashtra, Alstom will also provide trains to the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation. The French giant said it has also rolled out its first high power electric locomotive, which can run at speeds of up to 120 kmph, from its Bihar's manufacturing plant. The Indian Railways had awarded Rs 20,000 crore project to Alstom in November 2015 after the commissioning of the factory in Bihar's Madhepura. The FDI component in the Madhepura project is about Rs 1,200 crore. "Our operations in India are paramount to our business globally and we continue to stay committed to developing India's infrastructure needs, improving the quality of services to citizens and investing in the nation's economy," said Henri-Poupart Lafarge, Chairman and CEO, Alstom in a release. Further commenting on the completion of the first electric locomotive, Lafarge said: "This project stands as a shining example of Alstom's commitment to 'Make in India'.""Apart from creating thousands of jobs directly and indirectly, we have created a strong localised supply chain for this project, with 90 per cent of the components for the prototype sourced locally," he added. As per the 2015 agreement, Indian Railways will manufacture 800 such electric locomotives over the next 11 years in a joint venture with Alstom at the Madhepura locomotive factory.A total of five locomotives will be assembled at the factory by 2019, and rest will be manufactured under the "Make in India" initiative. As per schedule, 35 locomotives would be rolled out from the factory by 2020, 60 in 2021, followed by 100 every year till the target of 800 is met.
