Speaker, Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Kavinder Gupta distributed LPG connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) among BPL beneficiaries at Bawe here today.Highlighting the objectives of PMUY, Speaker said the scheme aims to safeguard the health of women and children by replacing the unclean cooking fuels, mostly used in rural India, with clean and more efficient LPG. Ensuring women’s empowerment, especially in rural India, the connections are issued in the name of women of the households, he added.Reiterating government’s commitment to work for public welfare, Kavinder said the government has envisaged this scheme to provide women with a safe and clean provision of fuel for cooking. More than 2500 households of Gandhi Nagar constituency have been benefitted under the scheme, he added.
Speaker said that many families are still deprived of LPG as cooking fuel and have to rely on firewood, coal, dung – cakes etc. that adversely affects the health of Women and children causing several respiratory diseases/disorders.
The Speaker directed the concerned officials to identify more BPL families through Socio Economic Caste Census Data and ensure that no eligible beneficiary was left out. He exhorted eligible women candidates from BPL families to apply for the scheme to reap the benefits.Stressing on the need to sensitize the people, Kavinder called upon the need to further expand the outreach of various centrally and state sponsored welfare schemes so that people can avail maximum benefit of the same. He asked the public to enroll themselves under ADHAAR based system to avail benefit of various government schemes.He appealed people who can afford unsubsidized LPG cylinder to voluntarily give up subsidy so that more such people can be benefitted under the scheme.The programme was conducted by Gulmohar Gas Service. Senior Political leader Baldev Singh Baloria besides social activists from different sections were present on the occasion.
