The twin events of 2nd J&K Medical Science Congress-2017 and 1st MP-PCOS, organized by Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), concluded successfully here last evening.In line with the theme of the Science Congress  - “Non Communicable Diseases in Developing Countries”- several international, national and local scientists deliberated on aspects like Diabetes, PCOS,  Metabolic Syndrome, Cancers, Cardiovascular Diseases, Thyroid Dysfunction, Bone Health, Trauma and Emergency care, Psychiatric Co-morbidity, Kidney Diseases, Oro-dental health issues, Genetic Disorders  etc.

The notable international faculty included Prof Robert L Rosenfeld from California, Jan Roar Mellembakken from Norway, Chandrika Wijeratne and Sirosa  Mandika from Sri Lanka, Dr G J Mufti from UK,  Dr Bilal Malik & Dr Rouf Baba from USA, Dr Akhlaq Nabi Bhat from Qatar Dr Modud Alamgir and Anees-ur-Rehman from Bangladesh besides several other doctors from various parts of the country.There were around 150 national faculty members which included DG ICMR, Soumya Swaminathan, former DG ICMR Dr VM Katoch, former Director AIIMS, Dr MC Misra, present director AIIMS,New Delhi,  Dr R Guleria, Director NIB Dr Surinder Singh, Director NIRRH Mumbai Smita Mahalle, Head of Orthopaedics, AIIMS, New Delhi, Prof Rajesh Malhotra, world renowned Psychiatrist, Prof Khandelwal, President ISSRF, MK Lohiya to name a few.There were three parallel sessions running with many satellite symposia such as Emergency and Trauma care held at University of Kashmir moderated by Prof M C Misra, Psychiatry workshop by NIMHANS faculty, Ultrasound workshop for PCOS at SKIMS, Angioplasty session at SKIMS, Nursing session at SKICC etc.The other highlights of the Congress were three Book Release ceremonies, Quiz contests and felicitation of senior and young scientists. In addition to Orations, Plenary Talks and Keynote addresses at least 450 senior and junior scientists presented their research work during the Congress. While 350 of the papers presented dealt with medical sciences in general 100 others were focused upon the Metabolic Syndrome – Pre-Diabetes and PCOS (MP-PCOS). 

Eighty six young scientists were selected to present their oral or poster presentation. Out of these presentations 20 were selected for Young Scientist award. The awardees include Tajali Sahar (Biotechnology, ICGEB, New Delhi), Itty Sethi (Biotechnology-, SMVDU, Jammu), M Shafi Sofi (Biotechnology, IISC, Bangalore) and Sheikh Tahir Majid (Biotechnology, KU) in Basic Young Scientist category, Muzaffar Rasool (SKUAST Srinagar), Ghulam Rasool Bhat (Biotechnology, SMVDU) and Kaiser J Giri (GMC Jammu) in Basic Scientist Best Poster category, Saniya Akhtar (Dermatology, GMC, Srinagar), Yuman Kawoosa (Psychiatry, GMC, Srinagar) and Zafarullah (ENT, GMC, Srinagar) in Clinical Young Scientist category, Bushra Rehman (GDC Srinagar), Mudasir Hamid Buch (GMC Jammu) and Tanveer Bhat (Dental College Jammu) in Clinical Scientist Best Poster award, Syed Douhath Yousuf (Biochemistry, KU/SKIMS), Aafiya Rashid (Biochemistry, KU/SKIMS), Sabreena Qadri (Psychiatry, GMC, Srinagar) and Pooja Sagvekar (AIIMS ND) in MP-PCOS Young Scientist category and Rumaisa Bashir (Pharmacy, KU), Tabish Qadiri (Endocrinology, SKIMS, Soura), Mehnaz Raffique (Immunology and Molecular Medicine Molecular Medicine, SKIMS, Soura) and MP-PCOS Best Poster category.The M P-PCOS Society which was launched in inaugural ceremony by the Chief Minister will now hold its second meeting in Pune in June 2018.The twin events held under the patronage of Director SKIMS, Prof A G Ahangar were collaborative effort between SKIMS, Srinagar, ICMR (NIRRH, Mumbai), AIIMS New Delhi, all J&K Universities, Medical Colleges, Dental Colleges and directorates of health and were mainly supported by MP-PCOS Society, state DST and Department of Tourism, Govt of JK. Prof Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, Professor of Endocrinology at SKIMS Soura, who was the Convener of the conclave thanked the national, iSnternational and state medical fraternity and other concerned Departments for making these events a grand success.
