Militants decamp with 5 service rifles from policemen guarding Court Complex in Shopian : Police

‘No injury or gunshot was reported during the attack’

Militants have snatched 5 service rifles from policemen guarding the District Court Complex in Shopian on Tuesday night by barging into the complex.A police official in the district told KNS said that 5 rifles (four INSAS and one AK 47) were snatched by the militants from the three policemen guarding the District Court Complex in Shopian town. The complex is nearly 700 meters away from the police station in the town.The official said that five policemen were deployed as security guards of the court, and at the time of incident only three were present on duty.He said the militants barged into the Court complex 10:20 pm. “The policemen did not get the time to retaliate as they were overpowered by the militants,” the official said. No injury or gunshot was reported during the incident, the official said.The number of militants was not known, however, the police said that it is investigating the incident. Meanwhile, the five policemen have been suspended for dereliction of duty and showing no resistance to the militants. “Departmental action has been initiated against the policemen,” the official said.Confirming the rifle snatching incident, Additional SP Shopian Ifroz Ahmad said that five rifles were snatched.The incident follows a day after five policemen and two private guards of JK Bank when militants ambushed a cash van in Kulgam district. The militants decamped with four rifles of the slain cops. (KNS)
