Students clash with security forces in Kashmir

Even as the authorities closed three higher secondary schools in Srinagar to prevent the protests, the students at five educational institutes in the Valley clashed with the police on Wednesday, which resulted in the injuries to the scores of students.Witnesses said that the clashes erupted at different educational institutes including Degree College Pulwama, Higher Secondary School Shopian, Bijbehara Degree College and Government Degree College Ganderbal besides protests at Nadim Memorial Higher Secondary school (NMHSS) in Kaloosa locality of north Kashmir's Bandipora.The clashes, according to the witnesses, erupted in these areas after the protest marches of the students against the thrashing of GDC Pulwama students on April 15 were foiled by the police.The protesting students had tried to block the main road in the respective areas following which the police tried to disperse them by using tear gas canisters, triggering clashes in these areas.

Reports said that during the clashes, scores of students sustained injuries in Shopian and Pulwama towns during the clashes who were treated either locally or shifted to the hospitals.Similarly, the students of Ganderbal boycotted their classes and tried to march towards the main Chowk, which was disallowed by the police, triggering clashes.The students of NMHSS Bandipora also staged protest against the GDC Pulwama incident and raised slogans like ‘we want justice’.Meanwhile, following the clashes on Monday in SP Higher Secondary, the authorities had ordered closure of SP Higher Secondary and Kothibagh Higher Secondary as precautionary measures.The Minister for Educational, Altaf Bukhari had said that some outsiders had managed to enter into the premises of SP Hr Secondary, which were joined by some students started stone pelting in the area.He had also appealed students to resume their class work and cooperate with the school administration in case of any demands.A police official said that some students in five colleges tried to take out protests rallies, which were dispersed by policemen. He said that few students suffered bruises during the melee, refuting any injury to the students. (KNS)
