Demanding immediate arrest of accused allegedly responsible for the murder of mother-daughter duo in South Kashmir’s Anantag district, locals from Adlach Magam area of Pahlagam town Saturday staged a massive protest here in Press Enclave Srinagar raising questions over police probe.Pertinently, the bodies of mother-daughter duo missing from Nambal village since February 7, 2017, were recovered from river Jhelum on 29 February. Afroza, 28, a resident of Adlach Magam wife of Bashir Ahmad Shah  and her two-year-old daughter Zaira Jan had gone missing on 6 February. The family members who were part of protest claimed that the duo had become prey of domestic violence and they were murdered by in-laws.The body of my daughter Afroza and grandchild were recovered from Jhelum in Semthan village of Bijbehara. They were held to each other with a rope, making it clear that they have been murdered. There is not an iota of doubt that they have been murdered by In-laws. The ‘greedy’ husband and mother-in-law were always seeking money from us. Afroza and her child had become prey of dowry,” Ghulam Nabi Thokar the father of Afroza told CNS.

The protesters alleged that police have not been taking any action against the friends and relatives of accused husband who pressurize them to close the case. “We want immediate arrest of Nazir Ahmed Dhobi, Showkat Ahmed Shah and Nazir Ahmed Shah who have political backings and are roaming freely. Their hand in this twin murder can’t be ruled out,” said the protesters. They blamed police for not taking the case seriously. “Police has done nothing so far. Both Afroza and her little child born torture marks when their bodies were fished out from the river Jehlum,” they said and demanded arrest of all the accused including the husband and the mother-in-law of the deceased woman.“We don’t expect any justice from the police as they are the ones who showered pellets and tear-smoke shells on the mourners who were protesting against the murder the other day,” they said and warned if culprits are not booked, they will hit to roads on daily basis.A police official said that they have already taken the husband of Afzroza and her brother in law and father in law into custody for questioning. “We are interrogating them to ascertain the cause of their death,” said a police official.
