Opposition National Conference Monday condemned the killing of civilians in government forces' firing in Kulgam district and blamed the PDP-led government and the Centre of "mishandling" the situation in Kashmir.Talking to reporters here in Srinagar, National Conference General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar while blaming Army for the civilian killings said that the present government has been pushing people to wall and this is the basic reason educated youth have been joining the militant ranks. There seems to be no end to the cycle of violence and the killing of innocent people due to the mishandling of the situation by the state government. The PDP-BJP government must clarify its position on the unabated killings, use of bullets and lethal weapons on the people," he said.Expressing distress over the growing incidents of killings and injuries, Sagar according to CNS said that the protests could be controlled by other means and it was neither "necessary to use bullets to control the protests nor shall it help to restore peace."When such type of actions by forces are not stopped, how can you expect that peace will prevail or people would contribute to restore peace," he questioned, adding that "there is a need to create a peaceful atmosphere and forces should be directed to exercise restraint". He said that after every innocent killing, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti comes up with misleading statements justifying such killings. Sagar demanded an enquiry into the killing so that the responsible persons are identified and booked under law. (CNS)
