Students of Pearl Academy, which has made Khadi an inclusive part of its fashion education, on Thursday participated in the Khadi India tableau at the 68th Republic Day parade here on Thursday. This was in continuation with the fashion, design and business institute's constant efforts to promote Khadi -- in sync with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts for the fabric. The students decked in khadi, performed as part of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises tableau while showcasing a collection of renowned designer Sharee Basu. Also, they got an opportunity to meet Modi. They will also be present at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday to meet President Pranab Mukherjee."I'm delighted to see that so many young students of fashion are showing a keen interest in Khadi.
They have been doing commendable work and I hope this will go a long way in popularizing Khadi among the youth," Kalraj Mishra, Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, said in a statement.Nandita Abraham, CEO, Pearl Academy, said: "Khadi is even more significant as it's one of the prominent symbols of India's independence. It is our endeavour to educate our students about the significance of Khadi and I am happy that our students got a chance to be associated with Khadi and be a part of the prestigious Republic Day parade".This is not the institute's first step in the promotion of Khadi. On Gandhi Jayanti last year, more than 2,500 students and faculty members took training and spun the charkha for over 60 days at their college campus here. The thread spun from this activity was then used to create an 8x8 feet installation of Mahatma Gandhi.
