‘Wanted’ Al Badr commander killed in overnight gunfight, thousands attend funeral amid snowfall

Government forces killed one of the longest surving militants and commander of Al Badr Mujahideen, Muzzafar Naikoo alias Muzze Molvi in an overnight gunfight at Muchwa on Srinagar outskirts.A police spokesperson said in a statement issued here that “acting on specific information about the presence of militants in Gulzarpora locality of Muchwa area, police along with 178-BN CRPF and 53, 55RR cordoned off the area and launched the search operation.“The militant lobbed a grenade on the joint search party, triggering an encounter. The encounter ended with the killing of an Al-Badr militant later on identified as Muzaffer Naikoo @ Muzza Molvi son of Abdul Majeed Naikoo resident of Baghat, Sopore,” he said.According to police, in 2011 the slain militant was involved in many militancy related activities which included firing on Army/police party in Sopore in which a JCO was injured and killing of two sisters at Chinkipora Sopore on January 31.“He was also involved in firing on the patrolling party at Bough-i-Sopore on March 21,and  killing of a civilian  namely Shamas u din Peer at Chankhan, Sopore and injuring a civilian namely Firdous Ahmed Shiekh at Jalalabad, Sopore in that year,” police said.“In 2014 he was involved in the killing of a civilian Abid Akbar Wani at Krankshivan colony Sopore,and also firing on the police party at Chankhan, Sopore on 7th of January in which an ASI Kareem Ahmed was martyred and three other policemen were injured. He was involved in killing of a civilian namely Waseem Ahmed Malla at Bagi-Islam Sopore on 21 February 2014,” the police spokesperson added.Meanwhile, thousands of people assembled at Sopore Town after learning about the killing of the slain commander on Friday morning. Eyewitnesses said that the men and women despite heavy snowfall attended the funeral procession of the Muzze Molvi amid pro-Islam, pro-azadi and anti-India sloganeering. Amid chants of pro-militant slogans, the funeral prayer of the slain militant commander was held at Ashpeer.(GNS)
