A local Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was killed in a brief encounter in Kakapora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district Saturday afternoon.Acting on a specific input, government forces including army’s 50 RR and police’s SOG cordoned off Begumbagh village of Kakapora and launched searches for militants suspected to be hiding in the area, a police officer said here. He said as the searches were underway, the hiding militants opened fire on search parties, triggering an encounter. The officer said in the ensuing gunfight, one local militant identified as Rayees Ahmad Dar was killed while another militant managed to escape. He said the slain had recently, a month ago, joined the militant ranks. The killing of the militant triggered massive protests and clashes in Kakapora and several areas of Pulwama as youth hit the streets and pelted stones on forces and vehicles plying on roads.Deputy Inspector General of Police, south Kashmir, Nitesh Kumar confirmed the killing of newly-recruited local militant at Kakapora and urged other fresh recruits to lay down arms before government forces. “The Government has many schemes for those youths who are ready to shun the path of violence. We don’t want them to die like this,” he told GNS.(GNS)
